Hallmark Channel announced today that When Calls the Hearthas been renewed for a sixth season. The long-running drama has continued to perform well for the network in its current fifth season, drawing healthy ratings on Sunday nights against formidable competition.
Inspired by Janette Oke's book of the same name, When Calls the Heart takes place in the early 20th century and follows a young teacher from a wealthy eastern family who moves to a small western coal mining town for her first classroom assignment.
The series is the cable channel's oldest original drama currently on the air, and will hit the 50-episode mark when it airs its fifth-season finale on April 22. The show's run has been notable in that it has managed to build its audience with year-over-year ratings gains in key demographics.
