By the time Henry 8 came to marry his fifth wife, he was 49 years old — well into middle age by the standards of the time — and she a mere 15. The vitality of his youth had considerably diminished: he was overweight and in constant pain from an ulcerated leg. As with Anne, Henry's ministers had a strong hand in the choice of Katherine, particularly Edward Seymour who thought that the young woman would lift the spirits of the ailing monarch. Unlike Anne, Katherine was not royalty, and her background and age meant that she did not enjoy the respect of the court. She has been raised in a house for wayward young ladies and, unbeknownst to the King, came to Whitehall with a dubious sexual past. That past came back to haunt her with the arrival at court of a former lover named Francis Dereham who threatened to reveal their former sexual relationship. She didn't help matters by having an affair with Thomas Culpepper, one of the King's groomsmen. These liaisons finally caught up with her and, to Henry's considerable sadness, she was executed on charges of adultery.
