A quiet, intelligent man from Arnette, Redman is at his friend’s gas station on the night that Campion arrives. Redman is the first man to be discovered with an immunity to the superflu and is taken by government authorities, first to the Atlanta Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC), then to the fictitious Stovington, Vermont plague
center. Redman escapes from the Stovington facility after a government employee attempts to execute him (the implication is that the character knows too much). After wandering through New England
for several days, Redman meets Glen Bateman and, shortly after, Fran Goldsmith and Harold Lauder. Redman becomes romantically involved with Goldsmith, accepting the unborn child that she carries; but their involvement causes resentment within Lauder, who holds an unrequited love for Goldsmith.
