The Secret River dramatises the British colonization of Australia in microcosm, with the dispossession of Indigenous Australians made comprehensible and ultimately heart-breaking as Will’s claim over a piece of land he titles “Thornhill’s Point”, brings his family and neighbors into conflict with the traditional owners of the land.

Character Bio

By his own admission a convicted lag, Thomas Blackwood came to New South Wales a felon. Like Will Thornhill he was a Thames waterman, but unlike Thornhill, he was not an honest one. In the new colony, this quietly spoken bear of a man has achieved emancipation, and a kind of redemption.
Settled on his own plot of land on a remote branch of the Hawkesbury River, Blackwood 'brews his own rotgut and lives like a king'. He has made peace with his life - and with this new land - in an enigmatic and surprising way. A way that will ultimately lead to his downfall.
