Born sometime before World War II, Sydney comes from a French/Belgian background, (he had a grandfather in the Belgian infantry), and his family's background was Christian. He had an identical twin brother, called Jacob; and their father's name was John-Michael, and their mother's name was Gretta. During World War 2, Jacob's family was rounded-up for experiments by the Nazis because Sydney and Jacob were twins, and their parents were sent to the gas chambers, despite the fact that they weren't Jewish.
Together, Sydney and Jacob later relocated to the USA and attended Yale. A long-time employee of The Centre, Sydney originally joined the staff with Jacob. As the organization's lead psychiatrist, Sydney was responsible for all of Jarod's simulation training. He is a trusted friend and father figure to Jarod. Due to his constant surveillance, Sydney is not able to assist Jarod directly. Instead, he has many heart-to-heart talks with Jarod on the phone. Sidney learns that he fathered a son named Nicolas.Sydney spends years hiding his comatose brother Jacob from the Centre. Jacob became comatose following a car accident with Sydney at the wheel, and so Sydney feels responsible. Through experimentation while Pretending to be a geneticist, Jarod devises a method that temporarily returns Jacob to consciousness and allows him to make peace with Sydney. Jacob eventually dies peacefully. It is implied that Jacob's defiance toward the Centre put him in such a precarious position with them.
