The Godfathers centres on nine-year-old Mike Varga, who lives with his widowed Hungarian mother Maria on Sydney's north shore. Maria Varga is confined to a wheelchair, crippled by a car accident which killed her husband. To help financially, she takes in three boarders - A taxi driver in his 40s, a 30-year-old commercial photographer, and a 21-year-old garage attendant.
