A new television drama series based on the book by Lily Koppel, The Astronaut Wives Club focuses on seven women who were key players behind some of the biggest events in American history. As America’s astronauts were launched on death-defying missions, the lives of their young wives were transformed, seemingly overnight, from military spouses to American royalty. As their celebrity rose, and tragedy began to touch their lives, they rallied together.

Kenneth Mitchell Cast In Series Regular Role On 'Astronaut Wives Club'
ABC’s The Astronaut Wives Club is welcoming another actor. Kenneth Mitchell will join the series as a regular. He’s set to portray Deke Slayton, a Wisconsin farm boy and WWII flyer and one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts. However, a medical condition soon inhibits him from blasting off into space, but this doesn't stop him from becoming a powerful voice in the space program.
'The Astronaut Wives Club' Casts More Roles
Two more actors are blasting off into the 1960s space race. Bret Harrison and Aaron McCusker are taking on the roles of two Mercury Seven men in The Astronaut Wives Club. Harrison will play Gordon “Gordo” Cooper, a hotshot, young gun with an all-American swagger. As for McCusker, he’s set for the role of Wally Schirra, an astronaut and a prankster.
Dominique McElligott Cast As Lead In 'The Astronaut Wives Club'
Dominique McElligott, known for her role as Lily Bell on AMC’s Hell on Wheels, recently landed herself the lead role of Louise Shepard on ABC’s Astronaut Wives Club. Wife to Alan Shepard (Desmond Harrington) aka the first American in space, she is described as a real-life “Sabrina” coming from a father who was the head of maintenance at the Duponts’ Longwood Gardens estate. Originally, the 10-episode series was set to debut this summer, but the network moved it to midseason to expand on the show’s concept and cast.

Astronaut Wives Club, originally slated for this summer, is now looking at a 2014-2015 midseason debut. Right now, the network has halted production to expand on the 10-episode limited series’ concept written by Stephanie Savage. Based on Lily Koppel’s novel of the same name, it revolves around the Mercury Seven’s wives, who were in the spotlight while their husbands were busy making a name for themselves during the 1960s space race. Originally, the show looked to showcase these seven women, but now it will also chronicle the lives of the Gemini and Apollo mission crews’ spouses. This new story revision means reconceiving the arc of the season and also means an expansion to the current cast.
'The Astronaut Wives Club' Casts Erin Cummings
Erin Cummings is set to join Odette Annable and JoAnna Garcia Swisher as a leading lady in ABC’s 10-episode summer drama series The Astronaut Wives Club. The series will tell the true story of the women who encouraged some of the biggest heroes in American history during the pinnacle of the '60s space race. As for Cummings, she will play Marge, the wife of one of the original NASA Mercury Seven astronauts, Deke Slayton. The Astronaut Wives Club will debut later this summer.
Desmond Harrington Cast In 'Astronaut Wives Club'
Desmond Harrington is joining ABC’s new Space Age. The Dexter alum has landed a series-regular role in ABC’s 10-episode summer series The Astronaut Wives Club. Set during the height of the space race the show follows a tight-knit group of women whose husbands are all astronauts. Harrington will play real-life astronaut Alan Shepherd, the first American in space. He is competitive, steely, and has a wry sense of humor.
Odette Annable Joins ABC's 'Astronaut Wives Club'
House alum Odette Annable has joined ABC's anticipated summer drama, Astronaut Wives Club. Set in the 1960s, the period drama tells the real story of the women surrounding famed American male heroes during the peak of the space race. Annable will play Trudy Cooper, the wife of Gordo Cooper, and the youngest of women dubbed "astrowives." She is a self-described tomboy with ambition and aspirations, and is a pilot to her own credit as well. The 10-episode drama will air later this coming summer.
