Spoilers Ahead!!!
John serves as one of Bellamy's thugs in return for power and does his bidding without questions. After this John still trusts Bellamy enough to follow him into Grounders territory leading to his eventual death.
John and Murphy appear to have known each other and were good friends before coming to Earth as when they first arrive they are always together. Murphy appears to be the leader of their pair with John supplying the muscle to back up Murphy's threats to other delinquents who don't work. John is also willing to go against Bellamy and the other delinquents to assist Murphy when they try to lynch him and later when he wants to punish Charlotte. However John does abandon Murphy in order to be allowed to return to camp after Charlotte commits suicide.
