Two teenage girls discover they were accidentally switched as newborns in the hospital. Bay Kennish grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother, while Daphne Vasquez, who lost her hearing at an early age due to meningitis, grew up with a single mother in a poor neighborhood. Things come to a dramatic head when both families meet and struggle to learn how to live together.
Before moving into the Kennishes' guest house, she, Daphne, and her mother Adriana lived in fictional working-class East Riverside, Missouri, where she was a hair stylist. Wihle she clashes with John and Kathryn, she tries to make things work for Daphne's sake. She doesn't hesitate to resist, however, when she sees that the two are trying to co-parent Daphne, insisting that Daphne is hers.Regina is an alcoholic, and collects AA chips as rewards for staying sober. Her relatives were also alcoholics, and she tells Bay that she's trying to keep her from going down the same path. Regina's best friend is Melody Bledsoe, the mother of Daphne's best friend Emmett. Melody points out that Regina and Bay share some traits: they're smart, strong-willed, and they both have a passion for art.
Regina accepted the invitation to go on a date with a guy she met at the Kennishes' fundraiser. She is upset when her former partner, Angelo, returns to try and work at a relationship with their biological daughter, Bay, since she believes that he left because of Daphne's meningitis diagnosis. She agrees to be his business partner in order to open up her dream salon, but refuses to take him back, as she is in a relationship with Patrick, an art gallery owner.
Later on, however, Regina decides to marry Angelo to keep him from being deported. When she tells Patrick, he is upset but they try to make it work. Regina gets half of Angelo's money because she's married to him but she isn't interested in it. Her and Patrick eventually break up because of the stress of the situation.
Angelo tells Regina that he got a woman named Lana pregnant, and upset, Regina walks out. Even though it happened before they married, Regina goes to tell Kathryn and tries to figure out how to tell Bay. Later however, when she's having lunch with Bay, she finds out Bay already knows and that Bay had gotten into a quarrel with him about it. Regina then realizes that Angelo told her about the pregnancy simply because he was afraid Bay might tell her first. Later, however, Lana decides to give the child up for adoption.
Regina finds out that she can no longer cut hair or sign anymore, due to a medical problem with her wrists. She gets a new job, but is fired after the first day, because she oversleeps due to being drunk from a celebratory glass of Champagne. After this, and through the influence of Zane, a friend from her past, she starts drinking again.
Bay finds out Regina has been drinking again and she was drunk the other night when she came home without her car. Bay confronts her about her return and the two get into a quarrel about it. Regina later tries to apologize to Bay, and asks her to keep it a secret, promising to go back to AA.
Daphne finds out that Regina is drinking again when she finds her passed out on the sofa and smells the alcohol on her breath. This further strains their relationship, which had already been suffering due to Regina's inability to sign. Regina's drinking is discovered on all sides and she's sent to rehab. Regina is pleased that she and Bay are living together with Angelo, and tells Bay to stay as long as she wants. Regina tells Daphne it's easier living with Bay.
