This was a very spooky episode! Creepy and atmospheric. I have a number of ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War and one ancestor who was tried for witchcraft so I most definitely relate to this show’s subject matter. I loved seeing Ichabod Crane learning to shower and otherwise exploring his motel room. Glad to see him wash his clothes. I loved his railing against the levy (tax) on baked goods when he reads the receipt for the bagged donut Lt. Mills hands him in the car and wondering why the citizens weren’t rioting in the streets. Trivia – the earliest known use of donut was in 1808 and Washington Irving, Sleepy Hollow’s author, is considered the first to have recorded the term “doughnut” in his 1809 book, History of New York. He describes “balls of sweetened dough, fried in hog's fat, and called doughnuts, or olykoeks." There are some factual errors in this show. Katrina Crane was supposedly burnt at the stake in 1782 after being found guilty of witchcraft. This is 89 years after the conclusion for the very last trial for witchcraft in colonial America in 1693. Also, no one was ever burned at the stake in North America. Native Americans burned people to death but the British had outlawed the practice some time before the settlement of North America began in earnest. The very last burnings at the stake by English-speaking people anywhere in the world took place around 1610. At Jamestown, the first permanent British settlement in North America, as the unprepared colonists were starving, a man was burnt at the stake for killing his pregnant wife and planning to eat her. As for the witchcraft trials at Salem and elsewhere, a total of nineteen women were found guilty and hanged. My ancestor’s trial was in 1692 in Fairfield, Connecticut. The trials and executions of good witch Katrina Crane and evil witch Serilda of Abbadon could not have happened. There were zero witchcraft trials in 18th century America, before, during, or after the American Revolution. Setting aside the impossibility of either of these women being tried for or found guilty of witchcraft, this is a very creepy episode featuring not one, but two resurrections. The reanimated dead officer is funny and scary and apparently working for Team Evil. He summons the ghost or shade of Serilda of Abbadon, who was captured and executed with help from Katrina Crane's good witch coven, and sends her off to fulfill her vow to resurrect herself and avenge her death by killing the descendants of those involved with her trial and execution. Throughout the episode, Serilda takes on a more more human form, much like the mummy in the Brendan Frasier movie became more human in appearance as he collected body part from various unwilling donors. Of course Abbie and Ichabod are able to defeat the evil witch but not before she tells Ichabod that his beloved Katrina is trapped between worlds, as in "not dead" - raising the possibility of a reunion for Ichabod and his wife. The episode ends with a Terminator 2-inspired scene of Jenny Mills, Abbie's sister, working out vigorously in her room at the mental hospital.
