Long ago there was a war between the beasts and the birds. The bats stay neutral. Both sides banished the Bats to the night. Today Shade a Silverwing bat dares to violate that law. The Owls demand he be punished. Freida the colony elder refuses and the Owls destroy the colony's home of Treehaven. In the resulting migration Shade becomes separated on a island and befriends Marina a Brightwing bat.
