[show all]In episode one of Sea Patrol, a peaceful assignment to provide security for an Internationally Protected Person turns swiftly into an explosive situation for the crew of HMAS Hammersley.
The ‘IPP’ is American Ambassador Davis (Marcus Johnson), and as the Hammersley men watch his medal presentation ceremony, two of their female colleagues are more taken by one of the Australian sailors being honored.
But the attention of C.O Mike Flynn (Ian Stenlake) is quickly diverted to a woman’s panic stricken mayday radio call from a fishing vessel she names as the White Knight.
Her name is Caroline (Freya Stafford), gunshots are heard in the background, and Flynn promises the desperate woman he will help her.
One of the inflatable boats is launched from Hammersley with XO Kate McGregor (Lisa McCune) in charge of the search.
But her crew stares death in the face when they realize the deserted White Knight is a floating bomb – rigged and ready to explode.
After a red hot blast, the XO is the last to be pulled from the water and while she is taken to hospital at the ship’s home port, Flynn has a reunion with an old friend and his new NAVCOM boss, Maxine White (Tammy Macintosh).
White again raises the issue of why Flynn has turned down promotions, but he is keen to return to his ship and greet a new crew member.
He is ‘Dutchy’ Mulholland (Conrad Coleby), a veteran of the Gulf War – and the same hunky sailor who was spotted at the medal ceremony by Bomber (Kirsty Lee Allan) and newbie, Bird (Danielle Horvat)
When a suspicious vessel called the Trader Star fails to acknowledge a radio message, Flynn and team pursue and board the boat, but as they check out its cargo, they get word of an emergency signal that may be linked to the White Knight.
Mindful of his promise to help Caroline, Flynn takes his crew from the Trader Star and pursues the source of the call.
Three bodies are found before Flynn learns that the Trader Star was a stolen vessel.
He realizes that Caroline must be on board with her kidnappers, and a daring late night raid results in the freedom of the tortured woman, and her revelation of a plan to assassinate her boss, the US Ambassador.
Again, a suspicious boat is destroyed by Hammersley and with the assassination threat apparently neutralized, Flynn and crew attend an elegant party at the holiday home of the Ambassador – only to discover that the enemy is within.
And after all his protests, Flynn winds up with an office and a desk job, while the Hammersley stands by for a new CO.
