Brendan 'Josh' Joshua, 32, Sergeant.
At the end of Series One, Josh was raging at the world for Grace’s death. By Series Two he’s turned his rage into energy and now takes life on with a new, defiant celebration.
A cool guy, Josh is a fatalist who has decided to play the cards he’s been dealt in life. Whatever the cards are, he’ll play ‘em. He deals with life’s situations in his own way – and if you don’t like it you can get stuffed. He doesn’t believe in whinging much - he just gets on with it, hiding behind his eyes and doing whatever seems the right thing at the time. He has a strong moral sense that is innate with him. It doesn’t come from God or from intellectualising; he just has a black and white view on good and bad.
Josh is an invaluable member of the squad, and Lawson’s right hand man in the grimmest situations. He would never admit it, but he has a fond admiration for Lawson. Josh dislikes his own brittle edginess and often thinks he’d like to have Lawson’s certain certainties. The others all think the squad would be diminished somehow if Josh suddenly wasn’t around. He unconsciously looks out for every one of his friends. Again he’d never admit it, but if you do bad to any member of the TR the wrath of Josh will land on your head. He can be frightening. He also has a great capacity for heroism. And he has a hero’s luck. Time after time he’s the one who will take the critical chance that makes a difference; it’s not clearer analysis of a situation or stupid heroics, it’s a blessing. Either you’ve got it or you don’t.
Josh grew up in a small country town with his parents and younger brother Gavin. His dad was a farmer and his mum at home. They were a close family, and just as Josh idolized his father, Gavin idolized Josh. They were healthily competitive brothers, driving each other to be better at everything. Josh soon moved to Melbourne where he joined the Victorian Police Force. He adapted to the life easily. He was athletic, emotionally detached and he fast became known as a bit of a wild card. When the Tactical Response was established Sergeant Brendan Joshua was immediately invited to apply. He didn’t take this as a compliment, just as the next step on the road. He passed the training streets ahead of everyone else in that first intake. The only negative on his file read: ‘extreme risk-taking tendencies’. He is quiet, direct, not a joketeller or the life of the party - his humour tends more to quiet irony and dry wit.
Josh can flare suddenly, ferociously, and at such times, no matter who you are, it’s best to steer well clear. He’s not a guy who holds grudges and has complete disdain for those passive-aggressive people who swallow anger. He can be cruel and unthinking. Josh is not one of those guys who gets on well with his ex-girlfriends. When the split’s inevitable he walks away, and doesn’t look back. Life just goes on and he rarely shows how much he’s been hurt.
