The show follows a crime, ususally adapted from current headlines, from two separate vantage points. The first half of the show concentrates on the investigation of the crime by the police, the second half follows the prosecution of the crime in court.

Character Bio

Michael Cutter is an Executive Assistant District Attorney working for District Attorney Jack McCoy.
Cutter is like McCoy in that he is willing to bend the rules to solve a crime. In one episode, he nearly commits perjury to allow Detectives Ed Green and Cyrus Lupo to search a store where a victim is hidden. Cutter is willing to use questionable methods to procure guilty charges, such as using a juror's infatuation with Connie Rubirosa to find a guilty plea.
Cutter relies heavily on his Blackberry and even uses it to look up statutes.
In at least one episode of SVU, he appears as a defense attorney; indeed, a conversation outside the courtroom (in vanilla Law & Order, not SVU), his past as a defense attorney is mentioned, lending continuity to what would otherwise seem to be an oversight.
