Jack Irish is a man getting his life back together again. A former criminal lawyer whose world imploded, he now spends his days as a part-time investigator, debt collector, apprentice cabinet maker, punter and sometime lover, the complete man really. An expert in finding those who don’t want to be found, dead or alive, Jack avoids the past. That is until the past finds him.

Linda is a newspaper journalist who has sacrificed relationships and intimacy for her career. Smart and dry she is exceptionally good at her job. Linda has no problem separating sex and love and is disarmingly direct and pragmatic when she’s after the former. She jokes about always falling for disheveled, burnt out sleaze-bags, which explains her instantaneous attraction to Jack who satisfies all the criteria with the exception of sleaze. To her delight she comes to learn that Jack has a robust, almost old-fashioned moral compass, perhaps more reliable than her own.
