Part of Hitler's vision for the Thousand Year Reich was that Germany would dominate the world culturally. One way they were going to do this was through the construction of a vast cultural complex in Hitler's hometown of Linz. However, Hitler labels Modernist, Abstract, and Cubist works by Jewish and Slavic artists degenerate and orders them to be sold or destroyed. They were burning paintings in the same way they would later burn the bodies of the innocent people they wanted to eliminate.
