Ser Waymar Royce, Will and Gared - three brave rangers of the Night's Watch (military fraction that guards the Wall), are sent to the northern of the Wall to track down a group of Wildlings seen in the Haunted Forest.

Recap Image

Will, as a good scout, went first into a dark snowy forest just to find dozens of butchered corpses, ripped into pieces and arranged in a shape unknown to him. As he got closer, among those corpses, he saw a body of a little girl, stabbed and pinned to a tree. Frightened and disgusted, he ran back. Ser Waymar Royce, young and courageous commander of the group, decided not to follow the advice of older and more experienced Gared who said that they need to head back to The Wall and report this incident to Castle Black (the primary headquarters of the Night's Watch). Ser Waymar instead insisted on putting fears aside and seeing the corpses from closer distance. When they got there, the corpses were missing. Gared saw a bloody piece of clothing under the snow and a tall, human-like figure with crystal blue eyes (known as a White Walker, mythological creature from ancient legends) behind Ser Waymar. White Walker killed Ser Waymar immediately and Gared tried to escape.

Will went to scout around in the forest, but he was interrupted by the screams. He turns around and sees the dead Wildling girl, standing and looking at him with her crystal blue eyes. Scared and disorientated, he ran for his life… In front of him appeared Gared - followed by several White Walkers - who is soon beheaded before Will’s eyes by one of them.

A deserted Night's Watch ranger, Will, was captured by riders of Stark’s House, one of the Great Houses of The Seven Kingdoms of Westeros (Westeros is a great continent in the far west, separated from the continent of Essos by a strip of water known as the Narrow Sea) that rules over the North. Will, rambling about White Walkers, was taken to Winterfell where, for deserters, exists only one punishment.

Lord Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark, the head of House Stark, accompanied by his son and loyal members of his house, sentenced Will to die by beheading him with a sword of his ancestors. Lord Stark didn’t believe Will’s last words about seeing White Walkers - that are supposedly been gone for thousands of years. He explained to his curious young son Bran, that sometimes “madman sees what he sees”.

While traveling back to Winterfell castle, members of a Stark household found a dead, rotten animal on the road. As they looked around, they also found a dead female direwolf with and five hungry direwolf puppies circling around the corpse. They shouldn’t be found south of the Wall.

Recap Image

Theon Greyjoy, wanted to kill the puppies because they couldn’t last without their mother, but Jon Snow (Lord Eddard’s bastard son) convinced him and his father that finding this pups must be a fate. The direwolf is the family symbol and crest of House Stark and there were five puppies – one for each of Stark’s children (Eddard and Catelyn Stark have five legitimate children: Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran and Rickon). Eddard agreed that children can take the pups, but only if they also take a responsibility of taking care of them. Just as they were leaving, Jon Snow finds a sixth, all white direwolf, the runt of the litter that resembles and belongs to him.

In King's Landing, the Capital of the Seven Kingdoms, the bells announced the death of Lord Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King (Lord Jon was the head of House Arryn, one of the Great Houses that ruled over the Vale of Arryn).

Queen Cersei Lannister, the wife of King Robert Baratheon, confides to her twin brother Ser Jaime Lannister (Jamie is the eldest son in Great House of Lannister, rulers of the Westerlands from the castle at Casterly Rock and the proud member of elite Kingsguard) about her fear that Lord Jon maybe revealed her secret before he died. Ser Jamie doesn’t share her concerns, since if the King Robert knew the truth they'd be both dead.

Back at the Winterfell, a raven arrived with news of Lord Jon's death. He was like a father to Lord Eddard. Lady Catelyn Stark (Lord Stark’s wife and daughter of Lord Hoster Tully, the head of one of the Great Houses, House Tully) share the bad news with Eddard, reassuring him that her sister Lady Lysa Arryn and her son are well.

But, a raven brought more news. King Robert Baratheon, accompanied with the Queen and the rest of the royal court, rides for Winterfell. Eddard knows that if King Robert travels that far North that can only lead to one thing - he will appoint him as the Hand of the King. Eddard heart is at Winterfell, but how could he reject the King…

As the preparations for King’s arrival are progressing, Stark’s children spend all of their free time with direwolves. Ned’s eldest son, 17 years old Robb Stark named his direwolf Grey Wind. Sansa, Ned’s eldest daughter and a beautiful, romantic young lady named hers Lady. Arya, Ned’s brave, skilled but rebelling youngest daughter names hers Nymeria, after a great warrior-queen. Ned’s youngest, six years old son Rickon names his pet Shaggydog and his 17 years old bastard son Jon Show chosen a name Ghost for his direwolf. Bran, a sharp 10 years old middle son, who is despite of his mother’s wishes - very skilled in climbing the walls, is still unsure how to call his puppy.

The King has arrived. Lord Eddard with all respect presents his household to the King Robert Baratheon (the head of House Baratheon, one of the Great Houses and the current King of the Seven Kingdoms).

King Robert, at first glance, looked as a strict man in official visit, but after few moments of scary silence he and Ned hugged and exchanged few jokes as all old war-friends do. King Robert demanded of Eddard to take him to the crypts to pay his respects, most of all to Lyanna Stark, Eddard's younger sister and King’s great love that was kidnapped by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. After one month of riding, Queen wasn’t very thrilled to hear this.

Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea in the Free City of Pentos, Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen (children of King Aerys II Targaryen, also known as a Mad King. House Targaryen, the former royal house and one of the Great Houses, was banished during Robert's Rebellion which brought House Baratheon to power) enjoy the hospitality of Magister Illyrio Mopatis.

Viserys has plans to wed his sister Daenerys to Khal Drogo, The Dothraki warlord in command of forty thousand warriors. In return, Khal Drogo will give Viserys the warriors he needs in order to regain his birth right to The Iron Throne. Today is the day when Daenerys will meet Khal Drogo, and find out if he approves her as his future wife. Khal is fearless and experienced warrior who bears his long hair as a proof that he was never defeated in battle. For Khal, one glance at Daenerys was enough, he rides off and Magister Illyrio reassures Viserys that this was a good sign. Daenerys stays unsure that she could spend the rest of her life with his savage warrior.

Back at Winterfell, King Robert formally offers Eddard the title of The Hand and Eddard asks for little time to think about it. Caitlyn disapprove the idea of leaving the North, but her daughter Sansa disagree. She would love to travel along the handsome prince and someday marries him. A great feast is held in King’s honor and Catelyn and Cersei (who is very much impressed by Sansa) are seated together and both disgusted with a sight in from of them. All men are drinking, eating and having a good time with prostitutes. All men, but one…

A rider in the night brought a letter from the Eyrie sent by Catelyn's sister, Lady Lysa Arryn that suggests that her late husband, Jon Arryn was murdered by the Lannisters. Maester Luwin advices Ned to take the position of the Hand, since he is the only one who could protect the King from Lannisters.
