Billions of dollars in precious stones are unearthed each year, but the rarest never make it to the open market. That's where Don Kogen, America's most extreme gem hunter, comes in. Kogen is CEO of Gem Guys, Inc., and a legend in the business. He specializes in rare stones from the most dangerous and lawless places on earth, racing the clock to be the first to each new find, always staying one step ahead of the competition.
"The Broker." A renowned gem expert, lapidary and colorful raconteur, gemstones have literally shaped Tony's life. Tony is the eldest of five brothers. Forced to become the head of his household at very young age, Tony credits this early responsibility as the driving force behind his determination to succeed.
Tony first met Don when buying gemstones in Brazil. Don and Tony got along from the start because they're from similar backgrounds - they had nothing and had to work for everything. "Because of that, I will never screw with Don and Don will never screw with me." Together with gem expert Gavin and security boss Fear, the foursome decided to take on the corporate gem world.
Tony might be a gregarious "people person", but there's a sharp business mind at work during any deal. Tony is the team's broker: when a deal's going down, he's working out the math. "I'm looking at potential yield, what quality of material we're going to get. Second, I'm looking at what money we've got as a company, and last but not least, what money we can make. And it happens very quickly."
A single mistake - misidentifying a stone, miscalculating the price, buying high quality fakes, getting robbed of the stones and the money - could wipe them out. But for Tony, the gambles are worth the risk.
