CSI: Cyber will mark a departure from criminal forensics, which has been the subject of the first three CSI series, focusing instead on cyber crimes. Inspired by the work of Irish cyber psychologist Mary Aiken, the CSI spinoff centers on Avery Ryan, Special Agent in Charge at the Cyber Crime Division of the FBI in Quantico, VA, who is tasked with solving major crimes that start in the mind, live online, and play out into the real world.
With her expressive blue eyes, soft, Southern-tinged voice and an acting range that can carry her from ...
Avery Ryan, Ph.D. was a renowned psychological practitioner in New York City when her patient database was hacked. She lost the loyalty of her clients (one of whom was murdered), and eventually her practice; as the series begins, the crime remains unsolved. Ryan joined the FBI's Cyber Division to ensure nothing like that could happen to anybody else. Sometime prior to joining the FBI, Avery's infant daughter died, resulting in the breakdown of her marriage.
Now a Special Agent in Charge out of Quantico, Ryan travels nation-wide in search of the criminals who live in the dark net, all whilst plotting ways to catch the man who destroyed her life. She is fiercely loyal to her team and heads a "hack-for-good" program, employing cyber-criminals in lieu of prison sentencing.
During Season Two, Avery was promoted to Deputy Director of the FBI under the proviso she was able to continue working in the field.
