CROWNIES follows five young solicitors as they face the pressures and endearing madness of modern single life - in a fast paced workplace that highlights the moral dilemmas and big issues facing an apparently civilized society.
They are committed, idealistic and hard-working, but their lives away from the office are filled with aspirations, explorations, fragile relationships and partying.
Illegitimis nil carborundum - Don't let the bastards grind you down
When the gods of justice decide to make mischief, their target is usually Richard. Wardrobe malfunctions, inconvenient amnesia and drugs with unexpected side effects all conspire to make Richard’s court appearances legendary calamities. Fortunately he has an inexhaustible supply of patience, even in the face of his own dread judge, Victoria Walker.
A tongue-tied and stammering advocate, in other ways Richard is an exemplary lawyer. Thorough – please don’t use the word anal – and conscientious, he will produce a trolley load of precedents where only a quick reference is needed. His memos are elegant and his briefing notes masterful. His compassion and empathy mean horrific sexual cases get to him, and in the Darwinian jungle of the DPP this can be read as weakness, but Richard proves tougher than he looks.
Sensitive, loyal and funny, he would make the perfect gay best friend, except he’s straight. Which is a problem when nubile Tatum and her jealous partner Conrad, mistakenly adopt him as a project.
Despite those who think he should grow a pair, Richard has plenty of courage. There is no disaster he would not face to protect a friend. In a job that prosecutes human frailty, Richard understands that forgiveness is a necessary grace. However, his crippling fear of speaking out may not only damage his career, it may stand between Richard and true love.
