A story of John Ellis, a disillusioned suburban ER doctor, who finds his existence transformed when he intervenes in a drive-by shooting, saving a young boy's life and killing one of his attackers. When he learns the boy is still marked for death he finds himself compelled to save him at any cost and discovers that his life and his outlook on medicine may never be the same.
Dr. Bridget O'Neill is the supervisor of the Samaritan Emergency Department. She's a conscientious and principled doctor who operates strictly by the book and expects others to do the same. Her careful watch over the ED only further complicates John’s situation, but as tightly wound and emotionally reserved, as she may seem, Dr. O’Neill isn’t entirely without compassion. Despite her insistence on maintaining clinical distance and her growing suspicions about John’s competency, she can’t quite shake her loyalty to, or concern for, her longtime coworker and friend.
