Wilson Cruz (born Wilson Echevarría), an American actor, won the hearts of audiences across the world and forever changed the LBGT landscape playing the first openly gay teenager on network television in his award-winning performance as Rickie Vasquez on the 1994 hit ABC series My So-Called Life.
Cruz is also known for starring as Angel in the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical Rent in its West Coast premiere which earned him both the Ovation and Drama Logue awards before his reprisal of the role on Broadway.
Wilson Cruz, whose heritage is Puerto Rican, is the eldest of three brothers. At age seven, Wilson began appearing in plays, among them Cradle of Fire, Supporting Cast, Becoming Memories, and The Roar of the Greasepaint..., as well as in a number of Shakespearean productions on both coasts. Blessed with a beautiful singing voice, Wilson also performed across the country with Young Americans, and has been featured in shows seen at Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and Sea World/Orlando.
Always a trailblazer, Cruz is recognized for playing one of TV's first transgender characters in Ally McBeal and gave a heart-rendering performance as part of a gay couple fighting for marriage equality on Grey's Anatomy. Other TV credits include: Red Band Society, Party of Five, Rick and Steve,The Happiest Gay Couple in the World, Shameless, The West Wing, Noahʼs Arc, Pushing Daisies and more.
Film credits include memorable roles in He's Just Not That into You, Nixon, Party Monster,Johns, All Over Me and After Louie, with Alan Cumming.
Cruz appeared in the Netflix series Thirteen Reasons Why and in Hulu's breakthrough GLAAD Award-winning original animated kids' series The Bravest Knight. He is also the executive producer of the critically lauded docuseries called Visible: Out On Television airing on Apple TV+.
During the pandemic, he created a series called What's Up with Wilson Cruz as a way to stay connected to fans and participated in numerous benefits to raise money for charity.
- Attached to play Angel in a television mini series based on the Broadway musical Rent, with Neil Patrick Harris as Mark Cohen, Rikki Lee Travolta as Roger Davis, and singer Shakira as Mimi, but the rights were pulled in order for Chris Columbus to make a film adaptation using much of the original Broadway cast including Wilson Jermaine Heredia in the role of Angel.
- Filmed a Public Service Announcement to raise awareness for the issue of homelessness among gay teens in which he revealed that he was kicked out of his house as a teen when he told his family that he was gay. His character on _"My So-Called Life" (1994)_ (qv) went through an almost-identical storyline.
