Wright was born in Melbourne, the eldest of three children.
He is the co-Founder and Director of The Black Lung Theatre and Whaling Firm.
He played the role of Johnno Mitcham in Jane Campion's series Top of the Lake (2013) - which saw him nominated for best supporting actor at the 2013 Critics Choice awards. He is currently filming the US adaptation of The Bridge.
On film, he featured as Thomas Bodenham in the film Van Diemen's Land (2008), as murdered journalist Brian Peters in Robert Connolly's Balibo (2008), in Matthew Saville's The King: The Story of Graham Kennedy (2007) and in Torn (2010), directed by Eric Manchester.
He has played lead roles for The Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne Theatre Company and in 2011 the The Malthouse Theatre and Sydney Theatre Company production of Baal, directed by Simon Stone. He has directed productions for Malthouse Theatre, Queensland Theatre Co., Belvoir St. Theatre, Brisbane Festival and others.
He is at work as a writer, designer and director on Doku Rai a co-production with East Timorese companies Liurai Foer (King Bin) and Galaxie, created on a remote island off mainland East Timor, and a production with The Encircling Sea. Doku Rai opened to resounding public and critical acclaim at Darwin Festival, Melbourne Arts House, Adelaide Festival and in late 2013 will continue to Brisbane Festival and Sydney Carriageworks - Doku Rai has been named one of the best productions of the year by Time Out and The Monthly Magazine, and nominated for Best Production of the year at the Green Room Awards.
