He is the second youngest son of a family of five. His brother Niall is a consultant neurologist at St Vincent's hospital, Dublin.
He made his broadcasting debut on the Poparama Show on Ireland's Radio 2 in 1985.
He was educated at Blackrock College and University College Dublin, where he studied History and Greek & Roman Civilisation.
He has two daughters - Ella (born. 2000) and Julia (born late 2004)
He is a grandson of Todd Andrews, one of the founding members of Fianna F�il, Ireland's Republican political party.
