Born in Kent to Anthony and Susan Hillier, James is the eldest of three boys and got his first real taste for acting playing Jimmy Porter in Look Back in Anger whilst at Maidstone Grammar school. Moving to London he studied English Literature at King's College and then went on to pursue a career in acting. After training at RADA he went straight into the prestigious BBC production of Great Expectations with Ioan Griffiths and having spent so many years as a cash strapped student was greatly impressed that the caterers served swordfish steak for lunch. Since then he has stared in Dramas such as Blackbeard: Terror at Sea with James Purefoy, Holby Blue and Survivors. His stage work includes Lulu with Anna Friel at the Almeida and the British Premier of Tennessee Williams, 'Something Cloudy Something Clear'. James likes to spend his spare time with his long time partner Amy Lamont and their two boys Sam and Albert and is a keen sportsman and sports fan, following Tottenham Hotspur and playing football, cricket and boxing.
- It was by chance that James ended up as an actor. He was performing a play around the corner from RADA and a friend suggested he should try out for it. He did and landed a place that year.
- James and Sally Hawkins played opposite each other as boyfriend, fighting partners and young lovers on five separate occasions whist studying at RADA.
