Lawson was born in Crieff, Perthshire, the son of Phyllis Neno (née Stamper), a sweet seller, and Laurence Lawson, a watchmaker. Lawson was educated at Crieff Primary School (then called Crieff Public School). After the 11 plus examination, he went on to Morrison's Academy before attending the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He initially attempted to audition for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London but was not accepted. He then sold carpets and did amateur work for a year in Dundee before auditioning again at RADA in London and successfully at RSAMD in Glasgow.

  • Because his name was misspelled in the Star Wars credits, there was some controversy about if it was the same actor playing Wedge in _Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)_ (qv). It is indeed the same actor.
  • He is a Musical comedy star in London. He won acclaim as the Title role in a successful revival of "Pal Joey" opposite 'Sin Phillips' (qv).
  • Uncle-in-law of 'Eve Mavrakis' (qv).
  • In the 1983 movie _Local Hero (1983)_ (qv), Lawson played Gordon Urqhart; in the TV series _"Holby City" (1999)_ (qv), he played Tom Campbell-Gore; and, in _Lucky Jim (2003) (TV)_ (qv), he played Jules Gore-Urqhart.
  • Was offered the role of Captain Antilles in _Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)_ (qv), but turned it down. The part went to 'Rohan Nichol' (qv). According to Star Wars continuity, this Captain Antilles has no relationship to Lawson's other character, Wedge Antilles.
  • Has a son, Jamie (b. 1979), from a previous relationship. Lived with actress 'Sheila Gish' (qv) from 1985 until they married in March 2004 in the Caribbean.
  • Appeared with his drama school classmate 'Ian McDiarmid' (qv) in _Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)_ (qv). His nephew, 'Ewan McGregor' (qv) later appeared with McDiarmid in _"Karaoke" (1996)_ (qv), _Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)_ (qv), _Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)_ (qv) and _Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)_ (qv).
  • His role as a pilot in Star Wars appears to have inspired both of his nephews. His younger nephew, 'Ewan McGregor' (qv), of course, both followed him into the acting business and into the Star Wars films in particular. His older nephew, Colin McGregor, became a pilot in the Royal Air Force.
