Angel Coulby (born August 30, 1980) is an English actress. She made her television debut in the BBC comedy 'Orrible. She is best known for portraying the character Queen Guinevere "Gwen" Pendragon in the BBC fantasy series Merlin.
Born and grew up in North London to Guyanese parents; she moved to Edinburgh to study for a degree in acting at Queen Margaret University.
Coulby is seen in an episode of Scariest Places on Earth, not! as a student who had an encounter with a ghost. Her breakthrough came in 2001 with her role in the Johnny Vaughan vehicle 'Orrible. She was later chosen to play Gwen, a young woman who would later become Queen Guinevere, in the BBC One fantasy TV series Merlin. She stars alongside fellow young actors 'Colin Morgan', 'Bradley James' and 'Katie McGrath' as well as seasoned veterans 'Anthony Head' and 'Richard Wilson'.
She took the star role of the jazz singer Jessie in the BBC Two Stephen Poliakoff five-part 2013 drama serial Dancing on the Edge, alongside 'Chiwetel Ejiofor', 'John Goodman', 'Matthew Goode', 'Anthony Head' and 'Jacqueline Bisset'.
It was announced in February that Coulby would star in the British remake of The Tunnel, a Scandinavian crime drama. She will star alongside 'Stephen Dillane' and 'Clémence Poésy'. The series aired in late 2013.
In an interview, she stated that she enjoys being able to play Gwen from an early stage, where she's humble and lowly maid servant, all the way to her becoming Queen of Camelot, in that capacity she has now starred in Series 1, 2, 3 and so far 4. She has stated in past interviews that she enjoys music festivals and has recently taken up sewing as a hobby, as well as designing clothes and playing guitar. (She would not, however, consider a career change as she has wanted to be an actress ever since she knew what it was.)
