Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is one of our favorite shows of all time over here at ShareTV, so to directly get in touch with the cast is literally a dream come true. Last week we spoke with Iain De Caestecker, who plays Agent Leo Fitz in the show. He was a friendly, down-to-earth guy who was so busy he chatted in between takes for the show! In an Exclusive Interview Iain gives us the scoop on Ryan Gosling and Lost River, his favorite foods, and what's to come for Fitz this season on SHIELD!
ShareTV: The first two episodes of season two have been a roller coaster for your character on SHIELD, from being cast aside to reworking through answers, there’s been a lot going on. What do you think is going to happen to Fitz and his place on the team?
Iain De Caestecker: The most important thing is being on the road to recovery, so that’s kind of the main focal point right now. He’s still part of the team because for SHIELD there are not a lot of people around anymore and there’s not a lot of resources, so they need everyone they can get. So I suppose they’re hoping Fitz will make a full recovery and be able to be as useful to the team as he was before.
ShareTV: Tell us about the audition process for SHIELD and how you got the part!
IDC: It was a while ago, I was in LA at the time. It was great and then we did a screen test with Elizabeth (who plays Simmons), and it was quite a quick process actually, it was all done in a couple of weeks.
IDC: It was also quite a quick process. I met up with him here and we spent a couple of days together and we talked a lot, hashed things out. I was very fortunate that he took me on to go on that adventure with him, it was great. He wrote amazing scripts and has the most amazing imagination. It’s kind of set in this once idealic American town. Town is kind of in ruins, it’s starting to fall apart. This young family; my character, my mother, younger brother, just trying to make ends meet. It follows their struggles.
ShareTV: When you were a kid, who or what inspired you to start acting?
IDC: I just watched loads of films, we were really fascinated with American movies. As long as I can remember I’ve been really interested in, and it was always something I wanted to do.
ShareTV: Did you have any specific actor that inspired you?
IDC: No one specific, I kind of go through period of finding someone whether it be an actor, director, writer that I like and just trying going through their whole catalog of things they’ve produced and made and getting really into it. So it kind of changes a lot, so I’ve gone through many.
ShareTV: I love that! It’s refreshing to see someone who’s interested in all of it! Many of your characters encounter danger, (Paul in The Fades, Liam + Lenke short film, etc.) what is it about these dramatic, difficult, and intense roles that calls to you when reading a script?
IDC: I don’t way overthink it too much, I suppose sometimes you read something and something connects with you and sometimes it’s the possibility of getting to work with someone you really want to work with and that just happens to be part of it. I’m definitely more interested in a darker examination of things, not in a morbid way or anything, I just have fun with it. The realism stuff I’m really attracted to as well. I try to not be too choosy or thought out what would be good to do next. I kind of just take it as it comes.
ShareTV: Besides acting, what are you hobbies and interests?
IDC: Most of the time I’m just hanging out with my friends, going to the cinema is great, and I like drinking alcohol.
ShareTV: What was the last movie you saw?
IDC: I watched a documentary last night about Gore Vidal.
ShareTV: What’s your favorite food?
IDC: I don't know if I could choose just one. But I probably eat Italian food the most. I also really love Twiglets.
ShareTV: What’s your favorite about filming a comic-inspired series like SHIELD?
IDC: There's a lot of inside characters or references for big fans of the comic books, which often gives the show an extra dimension.
ShareTV: Do you have any other projects in the works besides SHIELD?
IDC: We filmed for around 9 months of the year just now, so that takes up most of the time, but the idea of doing something completely different to the character I play in SHIELD is always really appealing to me.
ShareTV: Fitz doesn’t seem like a “rule breaker” and SHIELD is now rogue. How do you think he feels about how SHIELD as evolved as an organization?
IDC: I think Fitz has a constant level of fear about the risks of being a member of SHIELD so now he lost a lot of control over his main weapon, his brain, it's perhaps even scarier for him.
ShareTV: I know you can't reveal much, but can you tell us about anything else you're excited for fans to see this season?
IDC: I think a lot of questions will be answered and there will be new characters coming in and out which is always exciting, as well as more of the action and big set pieces that are synonymous with Marvel!
