I have a square tv set and hate those black bars.
The following site provides all you will need for Video Conversion, it lists: All types of video conversion software info. including file download links as well as detailed instructions for most types of conversion, I've been using it for over 10 years, I hope you find it useful.
Thanks. Been there done that. didn't find a program I liked.
Try Total Video/Audio Converter/Player. Im using it for a long time and im pretty satisfied. Its not a professional software, but it'll be useful for that kind of converting (and some other stuff too).

You could try ffmpeg (takes a little getting used to, but has all kinds of options for converting MPeg1,Mpeg2, etc. to divx/xvid, etc.- although I know most people don't like commandline). There may be some GUI frontends for it. Available for Windows and Linux. I've also used Nero to do some conversions and it does well. It is available for Linux and windows as well.
You could try ultra video joiner... if you need a copy just ask..
Please. Thankyou all for the suggestions.
But I need a fast EASY TO USE converter, that lets me set file size limits and does not make them wide screen or 16.9 again.
My TV is a square set. As I have extreamly bad eyesight due to diabeties even a pc screen is hard to see
did you try with Total Converter???
I use a different method. I didn't like those converting progs - too complicated.
It also lets you convert from AVI to MPG - MPG to WMV etc. If you set it to convert manually instead of automatically choosing a format, you can change size, bitrates and pretty much everything.
buktopmkd, would try it if I could get it to dl from the home site, tried 5 times no luck.
Try MediaCoder, great software!
I don't know if this is any good but worth a try:
EZ Video to AVI Converter.
You can get it from here:
if you don't want an ugly complex converter try MediaConverer... it's not very advanced but you can set filesize in bytes and it's really easy, best of all - it's totally free :)
(although you must register as a user to download the downloadable converter)
