In the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse, a small group of survivors travel across the country in search of a new home away from the hordes. Rick Grimes, who was a police officer in the old world, leads the group. As their situation grows more and more grim, the group's desperation to survive pushes them to do almost anything to stay alive.

  • The logo seen on the t-shirt of Rick's son Carl, is that of another Robert Kirkman creation, "Science Dog".
  • The Dixon Brothers, T-Dog, Jacqui, as well as Morales and his family, are not characters in the comic book, although they are each featured prominently in season one of the television series.
  • Carol's husband never appears in the comic, he is only mentioned to have been killed.
  • In season one, of the twenty characters at the camp, only eleven are actually from the comic book. Rick, Lori, Carl, Shane, Dale, Glenn, Andrea, Amy, Jim, Carol, and Sophia.
  • SPOILER: In the comic, Lori and Shane's affair was only a one night stand, instead of a regular occurrence, and is revealed in issue five, while in the show, in the second episode.
  • The first season of the show mostly comes from the first six issues of the comics. This arc is titled "Days Gone Bye", which is the same name as the pilot.
  • The Walking Dead Creator Robert Kirkman was on the set throughout the filming of the first season.
  • This is the second AMC show to feature an RV. The Walking Dead utilizes a Winnebago Chieftain, while in Breaking Bad, a Fleetwood Bounder is used throughout the show.
  • The name Edwin Jenner, the doctor at the CDC, is a reference to Edward Jenner, who developed the first vaccine (which was for smallpox).
  • During lunch breaks, the zombie cast would eat together, while the human cast ate together.
  • Actors who played walkers had to go through walker school to learn how to walk and move like walkers.
  • Frank Darabont also directed four of the show's actors - Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn, Juan Gabriel Pareja, and Melissa McBride - in The Mist (2007). DeMunn also appeared in Darabont's The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.
  • In an online interview, it was revealed that Frank Darabont envisioned having several self-contained episodes that would not continue the main story. One such episode would have been the season two premiere. It would have involved Sam Witwer (who Darabont used in The Mist (2007) and played the tank zombie in the series premiere) as a soldier in a Black Hawk Down styled Atlanta. Witwer's character would have encountered several of the cast before being bitten and locking himself in the tank.
  • The show was made into a haunted house at Universal's Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando, Florida. There was also a maze in Universal Hollywood's Halloween Horror Nights for their 2012 event.
  • For season three, the make-up team used darker skin tones for the walkers, to show further decay as time had progressed.
  • All of the principal actors have a "Last Supper" the day they film their death scenes.
  • The prison set took about two months to build.
  • During an interview, Robert Kirkman claimed Norman Reedus (Daryl) originally auditioned for the part of Merle Dixon. He was rejected, but his audition so intrigued the show-runners, that they created the part of Daryl just for him.
  • SPOILER: All of the seven main characters died, as of the end of the fourth season. With the exception of Andrea; Dale, Merle, the Governor, Lori, Shane, and Hershel have all been brought down mercilessly by another character, whether it's before or after reanimation (Andrea committed suicide).
  • SPOILER: The place where the Governor, Martinez, and Shumpert camp in the season four, episode six flashback, is the same place where the Governor and his soldiers wiped out the National Guard in season three, episode three.
  • The timeline of the second half of season four (eight episodes) takes place in eight days.
  • SPOILER: When Bob, Tyreese, Daryl, and Michonne hear the Terminus broadcast message from the radio, it was eight days before Bob would make his way there, and nine days before Daryl and Michonne would. Tyreese does not enter Terminus.

  • Morgan Jones' sons name is Duane. Duane Jones is the name of the lead actor who played Ben in the original Night of the Living Dead.
  • SPOILER: The timeline of season three is just under two months, stated by Hershel in season four.
  • As of the fifth season, there are three The Wire alums on The Walking Dead. MChad L. Coleman, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., and Seth Gilliam.
  • In season two, Beth is seventeen years old. In reality, Emily Kinney was 25 years old when she joined the cast.
  • SPOILER: With just four appearances (three credited as a series regular), Andrew J. West has made the fewest appearances as a series regular.
  • Originally, the characters of Lizzie and Mika were going to be cast as different gendered twins, with Mika being a boy named Mike. However, after Kyla Kenedy's audition via Skype, they scrapped the idea so they could cast her.
  • Andrew Lincoln, David Morrissey, and Lennie James are all English. Lauren Cohan moved to London when she was fourteen.
