The Simpsons

The Fox network's most successful series to date was a spin-off from "The Tracey Ullman Show" in which originally appeared as one minute shorts. The executive producers of that series, James L. Brooks and Sam Simon decided that these characters could support a half an hour series. It is now reported as the longest animated series in prime-time network television.

The Simpsons Renewed Through Season 30

FOX announced a renewal for The Simpsons today that takes it into even more record-breaking territory. The network has ordered Seasons 29 and 30 of the landmark animated series, which already holds the distinction of being TV's longest-running animated series, sitcom, and prime time scripted series.
Today's two-season order takes The Simpsons to a whopping 669 episodes, which surpasses Gunsmoke (at 635) for the largest number of episodes for any scripted TV series in history. The impressive feat adds yet another entry in the show's growing list of records that will quite possibly never be broken. And with the Sunday night staple continuing to pull in healthy ratings, there are no indications that its run will stop at 30 seasons.

This is one of those series that doesn't have a specific first episode. The first episode created was "The Simpsons" (1989) {Some Enchanted Evening (#1.13)} (pushed to the end of the first season because scenes were being re-animated). It was first aired on 13 May 1990. The first broadcast half hour was "The Simpsons" (1989) {Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire (#1.1)} (aired 17 December 1989). The pilot was "The Simpsons" (1989) {Bart the Genius (#1.2)} which aired 14 January 1990 as the second episode ever shown.

  • In the Anthony Horowitz novel Scorpia Rising, Alex Rider questions the sexuality of a character called Derek Smithers; this is no doubt a dig at this series' Smithers, who is a closet homosexual.
