[show]Philip K. Dick not only featured the ancient Chinese oracle, the I-Ching, in the book, he consulted it himself during the writing to determine plot direction. One of the characters, Mr. Baynes, borrows his name from the translator of the I-Ching version that Dick used, the Wilhelm-Baynes edition.
- Philip K. Dick actually did consult the I Ching while coming up with ideas for the book, much as Hawthorne does when writing his. This may imply he is something of an Author Avatar.
