Episode Quotes

Philip Banks: Will, I want the best for Ashley. When I was young I loved classical music, but my parents could never afford lessons. I would stand in parking lot outside the Phil Harmonic, hoping to catch a spare note in the night air.
Vivian Banks: Philip, when I met you, you were into James Brown.
Will: [laughing] He liked James Brown?
Vivian Banks: He even wore his hair like him.
Will: [laughing harder] He had hair?
Vivian Banks: Will, You're only 17. You don't have a rep yet.
William 'Will' Smith: [about Ashley] You're trying to control her too much. She's nine years old and she already has a calender telling her where she has to be and what she has to do.
Philip Banks: But she doesn't have to worry about that because you tell her what to do? You're not her father.
William 'Will' Smith: All right. But how come you didn't even know she doesn't like the violin?
Philip Banks: She liked it for a whole year until you moved into this house. Can you explain that?
Ashley Banks: I never liked it, Daddy.
Vivian Banks: That explains it.

  • Goof (continuity error): In this episode it makes clear that will is 17 and Ashley is 9. In later episodes like her first date Ashley is 12, but will has not aged in the series.
  • Goof (continuity error): When Phil is telling Geoffrey about his day at work he takes an aspirin and drinks the water. The glass of water is almost gone. But if you look closely a couple of shots later the glass is full of water again.
  • Goof (continuity error): Geoffrey comes in with aspirin and a glass of water for Phil. The glass of water changes during shots, even though Phil has not drunk it.
  • Goof (continuity error): When Uncle Phil drinks water for his second Aspirin, he drank probably about 1/4 of the water. In the next shot, the glass is almost empty. After this second shot, the water is 3/4 full again like how it looked like after Unle Phil drank the water.
  • Goof (factual errors): Will pawns Ashley's violin. Will is only 17, so as a minor he would not have been able to legally pawn anything.

  • First appearance of Jazz.
  • The lines, "Aww come on Uncle Phil, you gonna ruin my rep!" and "You're only 17, you don't have a rep yet!", said by will and uncle Phil, is a paraphrase of the lines from Will Smith's song "Parents Just Don't Understand".
  • The scene where Jazz is thrown out of the house in this episode is the same exact clip used in every Fresh Prince episode that features him being thrown out of the front door.
  • This is the only episode in which Uncle Phil doesn't have a beard, instead he is clean shaven with a thin mustache.
