  • Goof (continuity error): Barney's middle name is, for the most part, said to start with a P. But in some episodes his middle name is said to be Oliver and sometimes Milton.
  • Goof (continuity error): In the first couple of seasons there is window to the left of the entrance (as seen from the street outside) but inside the Sheriff's office there is no window. In later seasons this error was corrected.
  • Goof (miscellaneous): It's been established that the Mayor's Office is above the courthouse and jail. However there is no indication either inside or outside the courthouse that there is any access to the Mayor's office from the street level or inside the jail. At one point early in the series there was a door to the left of the jail cells which was later removed that could have been an access to the upstairs offices but since no one was ever seen using it and it was later removed from the set, there's no way of knowing.
  • Goof (continuity error): In Andy's house there is a short window to the left of the fireplace and in some episodes there is either a long window or a glass door.
  • Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): In the first half of the first season there is a sign in the drug store above a shelf which said "Enlargments" a misspelling of "Enlargements" which was seen corrected later.
  • Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): In episodes such as "Barney and the Choir" and "Rafe Hollister Sings", it is firmly established that Barney cannot sing very well and is often "off key". However, in other episodes where Andy and Barney are singing while working or sitting on Andy's front porch, Barney sings "on key".
  • Goof (boom mic visible): Some fifteen minutes into this episode, the shadow of a boom microphone is visible, and moving, on the walls of Opie's bedroom several times.
  • Goof (continuity error): When Andy and Aunt Bee are ready to leave, Opie goes outside to stop them. On the closeup shots of Andy, there is a large dent in the truck's roof that is not there in other shots of that scene.
  • Goof (continuity error): When Andy and Barney are sitting in the squad car in front of the courthouse, they are sitting several feet apart, Andy next to the driver's door and Barney next to the passenger door. When they change to a closeup, Barney is close enough to Andy that their shoulders are nearly touching.
  • Goof (audio/visual unsynchronized): Jim Lindsey is playing an acoustic guitar, yet electric guitar sounds are heard being played from it.
  • Goof (audio/visual unsynchronized): There is a little drum roll at the end of the song but only a guy banging sticks on the jail cell bars.
  • Goof (continuity error): In the opening scene, Opie is pitching to Andy in front of the courthouse and Andy is wearing a catchers mitt on his left hand. To let Annabelle Silby into the courthouse, Andy begins to open the courthouse door with his right hand because the left is still in the catchers mitt. As they're stepping over threshold the next camera shot is from inside the courthouse where we get to see Andy finish opening the door with his bare left hand and the catchers mitt is nowhere in sight.
  • Goof (revealing mistake): When Andy unloads the shotguns of Mr. Carter and Mr. Wakefield, its obvious that the shells he removes from the guns are empty, or spent. (Perhaps since the two are proven to be cowards this is intentional.)
  • Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): After unloading each shotgun Andy returns the wrong gun to each of the combatants.
  • Goof (continuity error): When Barney is sitting at the desk reading Christmas cards, the card he is holding switches to another one then back to the original one from shot to shot.
  • Goof (anachronisms): When the camera pans to Ben Weaver outside the courthouse looking in, as Andy and Ellie are singing 'Away in A Manger', a calendar hanging in the cell shows Christmas falling on Wednesday. Christmas in 1960 fell on a Sunday. The most recent year on which Christmas fell on a Wednesday was 1957.
  • Goof (continuity error): A close-up of a Christmas card from the Hubacher brothers says, "Greetings from State Prison." However, in the next shot, Andy reads it as "Merry Christmas from State Prison."
  • Goof (continuity error): In the long courthouse scene where Ed Sawyer meets Lucy Matthews, the steam heat radiator and spittoon on the floor under the bulletin board change their positions along that wall at least 4 times in one scene. They keep moving back and forth between the glass front bookshelf on the left and the door to the back room on the right.
  • Goof (boom mic visible): Reflected in the windshield of the squad car.
  • Goof (continuity error): Chester Jones appears in two places at the same time. First when Andy visits Jud and Chester, who are playing a game of checkers, to inform them that he is firing Barney. In the next scene, Andy has stopped in Floyd's Barbershop with the same news. Chester Jones is there and seems to be hearing the news for the first time.
  • Goof (continuity error): There is a scene where the prisoner is able to steal Barney's gun and hold Andy at gunpoint. In his close-ups, Barney is not wearing his badge, but the badge reappears in the wide shots.
  • Goof (continuity error): When Barney goes into the cell to prepare it for Gentleman Dan's arrival, the bunk is unmade. The camera goes to a tight shot of Andy and when it comes back to Barney seconds later, the bunk is made up.
  • Goof (continuity error): When Jimmy enters Opie's room, his hair is neatly brushed back from his forehead. In the very next shot, his hair is falling down over the right side of his face.
  • Goof (continuity error): When Andy and Opie are leaving the house to pick up Aunt Bee at the bus stop Clara Johnson wishes them "Good Morning." However, in an earlier phone call with Andy, Aunt Bea said she was coming in on the afternoon bus.
  • Goof (continuity error): When Barney goes to the Flint farm alone, he sneaks into the barn through the man door which is part of the right-side door when the double doors are viewed from the outside. However, the next camera shot is viewing the double doors from inside the barn where we see Barney entering a man door in what would be the left double door when viewed from the outside. The man door suddenly switched sides as Barney stepped into the Barn.
  • Goof (continuity error): When Barney is at the Flint farm sneaking from the barn to the hen house, we can see that the door to the hen house has a small window about head high on the outside of the door. However, when viewed from inside the hen house, the door has no such window. And when Flint swings open the door to bring in a sack, we can now see the outside of the door and see that there is no window in the door.
  • Goof (factual errors): In the scene where Andy and Barney are staked out at Sam Becker's farm studying Sam driving his tractor in a field, Barney muses that Sam is planting marijuana. Andy doubts it is marijuana, but states that Sam is definitely planting something. The goof is that Sam is using his tractor to pull a set of soil cultivation disks. If Sam were actually planting something he would be pulling a planter implement of some sort and not a set of disks. Also, the disks are just rolling noisily across the top of the ground and are not cutting into the soil as would be required for soil cultivation.
  • Goof (revealing mistake): Jim's acoustic guitar makes electric guitar sounds.
  • Goof (plot holes): After the wife-beating happened that Bob Rogers's chart predicted, Andy sends him to handle the case. He leaves in a squad car knowing only the name of the assailant and nothing about where he needs to go.
  • Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Frank Myers, the kindly old man that the town wants to evict, is showing Andy his valuables, he pulls out an item that he says he got from the St Louis World's Fair of 1906. The St Louis World's Fair started and ended in 1904.
