Episode Quotes

Jemma Simmons: Look at me. Do I look like I'm Hydra?
Burnell: You look like a bag lady.
Jemma Simmons: So, you're Hydra, and you've been protecting Skye?
Grant Ward: Yeah. That's why I joined the Resistance.
Jemma Simmons: Oh, always the double agent.

Jemma Simmons: And this is who you woke up with? You two were together? Oh, this isn't the Framework. This is Hell.

  • Goof (continuity error): After leaving the park bench, Jemma opens the driver's door to a car and the window is rolled down. She gets in the car and the camera switches to an interior shot of the car as she sits down and closes the door and the window is now rolled up.

  • This is Brett Dalton's first episode on the show since the season 3 finale with his portrayal of Hive.
  • There is lots of green while in the Framework, like in The Matrix (1999), which also has a simulated reality.
  • SPOILER: Dedicated to the deceased Bill Paxton(2017) who played SHIELD double agent of Hydra for several episodes of season 1.
  • The title of the episode is a reference to the Marvel comic series What If? Comic Books. The series took significant events from the Marvel Universe and speculate about what might have happened if it had had a different outcome. Each issue offers a look at characters we know in situations they might never really face.
  • This episode includes an epitaph for the late Bill Paxton, who died from complications following heart surgery, before the ending credits.
