Dethklok is the biggest, baddest, and most famous heavy metal band in the world. The quintet, consisting of Nathan Explosion (vocals), William Murderface (bass), and Pickles the Drummer, along with guitarists Toki Wartooth and Skwisgaar Skwigelf, have to deal with their fame, and being monitored by a government organization out to destroy them.

  • The name of the grocery store in the first episode is "Fintroll's" a reference to the Finnish folk-metal band Finntroll. Other references to metal bands include the restaurants "Burzum" and "Dimmu Burger" (as a reference to "Dimmu Borgir") the outdoor store "Marduk's" and the hardware store "Gorgoroth".
  • The series was originally named Death Clock Metalocalypse. Due to the name "Death Clock" already copyrighted, the name was then changed to Dethklok Metalocalypse. To prevent confusion the name was then shortened to Metalocalypse (the band is still named Dethklok).
  • Part way through the first season of the show, the band became endorsed by EMG pickups. Later episodes were changed to reflect the endorsement, with all pickups on the guitars and basses being changed to EMG. However early episodes and the show's intro remained the same, with the guitars and bases using the original stock Gibson pickups.
  • Dr. Rockso's real name is Leonard Rockstein
  • The series creators had the final designs for most of the band members finished when the show went into production, except for Pickles, who went through twenty or more design concepts before finally settling on the current character.
  • In the first scene of the season 3 premiere, the members of young Dethklok appear signing on their record label. All the members of Dethklok are there except for Toki Wartooth, who has been replaced by an older looking person. Later, his name is revealed to be Magnus Hammersmith, who was fired after he attacked Nathan Explosion with a knife, and eventually replaced by Toki.

  • When Toki enters late for his "auditions appointments", his shadow on the floor has wings like he does during the duel.
  • The guitar solo in "Blazing Star" is to the same melody as Magnus's soliloquy in "Morte Lumina".
  • SPOILER: Most of the weapons given to the band by Jomfru are used in the "Giving It Back" section. Nathan uses the pen to write a check, Skwisgaar gives away the strings, Pickles the drum sticks, and Murderface the bass pick. The Hot Topic gift card is used later by Ishnifus to create a distraction.
  • Dethklok play Gibson Guitars and Krank Amps exclusively. William Murderface plays a Gibson Thunderbird Studio 5-String Bass. Skwisgaar Skwigelf plays a Gibson X-Plorer (Explorer) guitar. Toki Wartooth plays a Gibson V-Factor (Flying V) guitar.
  • Members of San Francisco metal band Metallica, James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett voiced Fan #1 and Fan #2 in the episode "Curse of D." Michael Amott of Swedish metal band Arch Enemy has also lent his voice to a future episode, as have members of Seattle metal band Nevermore.
  • According to a behind the scenes video on AdultSwim.com, all guitar parts played by Dethklok are fret-accurate reproductions of Brandon Small's guitar playing. Originally Small had played the parts in front of a green screen and had sensors attached to his fingers for the animators to reproduce, but this way was scrapped in favor of the animators referencing video and photos to traditionally animate the guitar playing.
  • When Nathan Explosion yells over the loudspeaker at the grocery store, he makes references to three different Cannibal Corpse songs: "Rotted Body Landslide," "Every Bone Broken," and "Hammer Smashed Face."
  • When Dethklok talks about "blowing your brains out" would make a great album cover, they are referring to Norwegian black metal-band Mayhem's "Dawn of the Black Hearts" bootleg album. The cover artwork is a photo of band member "Dead" after he committed suicide in 1991, using a shotgun to his head.
  • First appearance of Doctor Rockso
  • This is the only episode in which Nathan Explosion actually sings.
  • The background onstage at the comedy club (crooked window and piano) is a reference to The Comedy Connection, formerly in Boston's Fanuiel Hall. Brendon Small went to college in Boston and got his start in comedy clubs in the area.
  • There are several references to influential European black metal bands. The first is Burzums, the restaurant, which is a reference to Norwegian one-man band Burzum. Gorgoroth's Medical Supply references the Norwegian band Gorgoroth. Marduk's Putt & Stuff is named after the Swedish band Marduk.
  • The letter M featured in the 'DieForDethklok.com' emblem is actually a mirror-imaged version of the letter M used in the Metallica logo.
  • In a deliberate discontinuity first shown here and then repeated throughout the series, whenever someone forces Nathan to wear a collared "dress up" shirt, his trademark long hair is shown shockingly chopped off to a shoulder length bob. However, when he returns to his usual black t-shirt, his long hair is miraculously restored.
  • One of the fans seen watching Pickles when he wakes up is an old man with a long beard who was seen in "Snakes n' Barrels" as being under the influence of Totally Awesome Sweet Alabama Liquid Snake.
  • The letter M featured in the 'DieForDethklok.com' emblem is actually a mirror-imaged version of the letter M used in the Metallica logo.
  • The assassin's number, 216, is 6 x 6 x 6.
  • The fast food burger place is named "Dimmu Burger" after the Norwegian symphonic black metal band "Dimmu Borgir".
  • The name of the school is Carpathian Forest which is yet another Norwegian black metal band.
  • The name of the High School is "Carpathian Forest High", it is supposed to be a joke with the name of the Doom Metal band called Carpathian Forest
  • Former president of Argentina, Nestor Kirchner, gives Toki the award for his work with kids.
