Neville Brand played a former Union Army officer who came to the Rangers with something of a checkered past, which amused his younger partners. Riley, a gentle soul by nature, had been raised by Indians and so was the best tracker. Cooper was from New Orleans and had the reputation of a fast gun, although not as a gunfighter.

Captain Edward Parmalee: I said I might give you another chance under certain conditions.
Chad Cooper: That's mighty kind of you, Captain.
Reese Bennett: She was mighty persuasive, wasn't she, Captain.
Captain Edward Parmalee: Persuasion had nothing to do with it. It just so happens I have an assignment that you three are eminently qualified for. It's a dirty, thankless job that nobody volunteered for and if you three think you can handle it...
Chad Cooper, Reese Bennett, Joe Riley: Yes sir!
Captain Edward Parmalee: You volunteering?
Chad Cooper, Reese Bennett, Joe Riley: Yes sir!
Captain Edward Parmalee: In that case you get first crack at the new equipment.
01x18 - That's Noway, Thataway Season 1 / Episode 18: - That's Noway, Thataway

Newton Weekes: [Dudley is pretending to be an itinerant preacher] Friends, this is Reverend Jones. Madam, if you think he looks young, he thinks old.
Dudley Leicester: And this, brethren and sisteren, is one of my converts. When I found this unfortunate soul, he was nothing but a bum - a poor, penniless, drunken, no-good bum. Yes, it took a lot of time, but I finally showed him the error of his ways.

Season 1 Trivia

  • Episode 13 - Goof (anachronisms): Jess Moran is urged to "Eat your steak -- you need the protein." Though proteins were known from roughly 1830, their exact role in human biology was not fully understood -- and Riley probably wouldn't have known the word "protein", anyhow. (Ditto for not allowing Moran
  • Episode 14 - Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): After Joe, Chad and Reese get locked in the room, Chad notices that fireworks are in the boxes (spelled in Spanish). He uses a crowbar to open the boxes. The whole time, Joe is trying to open the door with his pocket knife.
  • Episode 14 - This marks the first time Neville Brand's character suffers a whipping. Later, he's flogged in "The Last of the Caesars - Absolutely."
  • Episode 05 - Both of the female actors would die prematurely due to illness: Myrna Fahey in 1973 at age 40 from cancer, and Estelita Rodriguez in 1966 (about 5 months after the air date) at age 37 from influenza.
  • Episode 09 - Goof (miscellaneous): When Chad jumps the sentry, he kicks him against a stationary rock formation. The rock formation moves as the sentry falls against it.
