Good Times was a spin-off of Maude. The series centered around Maude's black housekeeper Florida Evans, her husband James, and children J.J., Thelma, and Michael. The Evans also had a next door neighbor Wilona Woods who was also a main character on the show.The family lived in a housing project in southern Chicago and were always struggling to survive. Mr. Bookman was the Evans' landlord.

- The painting shown during seasons 4 and 5 opening and closing was called The Sugar Shack painted by Ernie Barnes. It was also used as the cover of Marvin Gaye's 1976 album, "I Want You".
- Louis Gossett Junior was the only member of the cast to won an Oscar. He played Richard Gere's very tough drill sergeant Emil Foley in Officer and a Gentleman, for which he won the Academy Award.
