Ellery Queen

Starring Jim Hutton as author/detective Ellery Queen and with David Wayne as his father, Inspector Richard Queen. The show was different from other whodunits in that Ellery Queen would break through the fourth wall towards the end of each episode and offer a challenge to the viewer to figure out the correct solution to the crime.

Season 1 Quotes

Unknown Episode Unknown Episode:

Ellery Queen: I've been thinking about your offer...
Simon Brimmer: I'm a student of the human voice, Mr. Queen, and I sense a certain reluctance in yours. Is it the money?
Ellery Queen: No, the fee is very generous.
Simon Brimmer: Then what's the problem? You're one of the best mystery writers in the business, and that's exactly what I need. "The Casebook of Simon Brimmer" is just about empty, and that microphone is insatiable. All I'm asking for is the right to buy your private files, and have them adapted into radio scripts.
Ellery Queen: Then my cases would become *your* cases, solved by you.
Simon Brimmer: Well, of course, I couldn't use your name. After all, my audience tunes in to hear *me*.
01x14 - The Adventure of the Sunday Punch Season 1 / Episode 14: - The Adventure of the Sunday Punch

Ellery Queen: Well, there you have it. Who do you think killed Lamont Franklin? Was it his widow Carol, or his brother-in-law, Doug Carmichael? How about Claude Sitwell, or Roger Woods, or his wife Emily? How about Billy Geeter, or was it someone else? Now, I'll tell you one thing: that wire spindle is very important. You got the message? Let's see.

  • Episode 06 - This episode was the first to air on Sundays, as a one-time special to see if the series would draw enough ratings to be renewed for the rest of the season (the show it replaced, "The Family Holvak," had finished production and ran off a few more episodes in December). NBC, facing a devastating drop in i
  • Goof (continuity error): In the scene where Ellery tells his father that he knows who the murderer is, when looking at Ellery's face view he is wearing just a shirt, but when looking at his back he is wearing his brown jacket.
  • Episode 12 - Goof (factual errors): The wine bottle used as a dying clue, when read aloud, is pronounced "der Schwarze Falke" which is the correct spelling and pronunciation. The label on the bottle, however reads: "Der Schwartz Falke".
