Episode Quotes

Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham: [correcting Tom on how to address a noblewoman] Don't call her "Your Grace."
Tom Branson: I thought it was correct.
Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham: For a servant or an official at a ceremony, but in a social situation call her "Duchess."
Tom Branson: But why don't I call you "Countess?"
Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham: Certainly not!
Tom Branson: There's no logic in it.
Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham: If I were to ever search for logic I wouldn't look for it among the English upper class.
Terence Sampson: You think you're so holy, don't you?
Michael Gregson: I have won against a card sharp. There is pleasure in that. [as he leaves the room, he pats Sampson on the back and laughs]
Lady Mary Crawley: [to Anna] Sometimes I don't know whom I'm most in mourning for - Matthew or the person I used to be when I was with him.

  • Goof (anachronisms): During Nellie Melba's concert, Isobel Crawley remarks to the Dowager Duchess of Grantham, 'I prefer Bartok'. Bartok's music was virtually unknown in Britain in 1922 and would certainly not have been familiar to people who lived in rural Yorkshire.
  • Goof (continuity error): During preparation for dinner, Lord Grantham is walking around the table and stops to pick up a card at one of the place settings. He holds it in front of him with both hands but in the next shot, he is holding it only with his left hand with his right hand down by his side.

  • The Rossetti whose poetry is quoted is British poet Christina Georgina Rosetti (1830-1894).
  • Dame Nellie Melba (1861-1931), the first classical music performer to come from Australia, was the greatest operatic soprano of her day. She was born Helen Porter Mitchell but changed her name in honor of Melbourne, Australia.
