Dr. Spencer Reid is a Supervisory Special Agent. He is a genius who graduated from Las Vegas High School at age 12, and holds PhDs in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Engineering, as well as BAs in Psychology and Sociology, and, as of season four, is working on a BA in Philosophy. It has been revealed that he has an IQ of 187, can read a dizzying 20,000 words per minute, and has an eidetic memory. Most of the members on the team are intimidated by his profound knowledge. He is habitually introduced as "Dr. Spencer Reid", in contrast to the other agents' introductions as "Supervisory Special Agent". The purpose of this, as explained by Unit Chief Aaron Hotchner in the pilot episode "Extreme Aggressor", is to create a respectable first impression of Spencer, deflecting judgments about his age. His mother, Diana Reid (Jane Lynch), suffers from schizophrenia, and is currently committed to a mental institution. In the season seven episode "Proof", Spencer completely ignores SSA Jennifer Jareau for not telling him the that SSA Emily Prentiss was alive. Spencer is also the godfather of Jennifer's son Henry. In the eighth season Spencer is involved with a woman whom he has never met in person due to the fact she is being stalked. Reid watches her die the first time they ever meet in person when her stalker finally catches up with her in the episode "Zugzwang". The stalker commits murder-suicide. Reid is devastated by the loss but returns to work quickly.

Dr. Spencer Reid Quotes

12x16 - Assistance is Futile Season 12 / Episode 16: - Assistance is Futile

Dr. Spencer Reid: [having noticed a scar on Delgado] What happened?
Luis Delgado: Welcoming committee.
Dr. Spencer Reid: You okay?
Luis Delgado: I am right now. It's later I'm worried about.
Dr. Spencer Reid: Anything I can do to help?
Luis Delgado: Yeah. Give me some of that "don't touch the skinny white guy" pixie dust you got sprinkled on you.
12x16 - Assistance is Futile Season 12 / Episode 16: - Assistance is Futile

Jennifer Jareau: [visiting Reid in prison] How are you doing?
Dr. Spencer Reid: I'm okay. I, uh... I'm really happy to see you. I just... I kind of wish you hadn't come. It's not a good idea.
Jennifer Jareau: Sorry. You're stuck with me. Garcia has us on shifts, and she of course took first dibs, but, uh, they needed her in the office for a case, so I was the lucky one.
Dr. Spencer Reid: A case? JJ, you should not be here.
Jennifer Jareau: The last time I saw you, I promised you would not be alone. I am just trying to keep up the best way I can.
Dr. Spencer Reid: What's the case?
Jennifer Jareau: What?
Dr. Spencer Reid: The case. I'm assuming you stayed behind unless it's local. Is it local?
Jennifer Jareau: No. New York. But... you really want to hear this?
Dr. Spencer Reid: Yeah. I'd... I'd love something to think about besides, you know, this.
Jennifer Jareau: Okay. Um... last night, they found the latest victim, which is the third in the last six weeks. He dumps them in alleys. All female, in their twenties. Equal opportunity; he crosses race lines. Oh, and the media's having a field day. They're calling him the Bone Crusher.
