This show based on the award-winning documentary by Ryan McGarry, a medical drama that takes place in the busiest, most notorious ER in the nation, Los Angeles County Hospital/USC Medical Center in Boyle Heights, CA, where the staggering influx of patients can outweigh the limited resources available to the extraordinary doctors and nurses whose job is to treat them all – creating a condition known as "Code Black."
The doctors work with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to find an antidote to the deadly viral outbreak at Angels Memorial. Also, Leanne makes a life-changing decision, and Jesse welcomes a new batch of residents.
Ahead of its upfront presentation next week, CBS has given a third-season renewal to Code Black. Considered to an 'on-the-bubble' show since early in its run, the medical drama has again received a last-minute pickup for 2017-2018 despite drawing only modest ratings.
Bucking this year's trend of networks renewing primarily in-house productions, Code Black is being brought back even though CBS co-produces the series with ABC Studios. Keeping the show around does give CBS at least one medical drama in its lineup for next season.
