At the outset of the show, Chuck Bartowski is presented as a twentysomething underachiever who works at the local Buy More in its Nerd Herd division (a fictionalized Geek Squad). Chuck's life stalled after his college roommate, Bryce Larkin, planted test answers under Chuck's bed and then reported him to the officials, which led to Chuck's expulsion from Stanford University in 2002 - only twelve credits shy of completing his bachelor's degree. He also lost the love of his life: college girlfriend, Jill Roberts. Following his expulsion, Chuck moved in with his sister and began working at the Burbank, California branch of Buy More. At some point over the next five years Chuck became the Nerd Herd supervisor. In the pilot, which picks up five years later, the viewers are introduced to the key persons in Chuck's current life: his older sister, Eleanor Fay "Ellie" Bartowski, M.D., her live-in boyfriend, Devon "Captain Awesome" Woodcomb and Chuck's best friend since childhood, Morgan Grimes. Little else is known about Chuck's family except that his mother left when he was in fifth grade and that his father Stephen Bartowski was "never really there," and left for good sometime before Chuck completed high school.

On his birthday in 2007, Chuck opens an email from Bryce Larkin that downloads the entire Central Intelligence Agency/National Security Agency database into his brain, a database known as the Intersect. Unbeknownst to Chuck, the Intersect computer has been destroyed, making his brain the only location of this top-secret information. The government learns that Chuck Bartowski was the last known person that Bryce Larkin contacted, and so both the CIA and NSA (independent of each other) send agents to find him. The CIA dispatches field officer Sarah Walker to find him, while the NSA sends Major (now Colonel) John Casey to assassinate him. The two agents eventually cross paths, and Sarah fends off Casey's assassination attempts when they discover that Chuck is a human version of the Intersect and sees a rapid-fire series of images (or "flashes") whenever he sees something that is in the Intersect database. The two agencies conclude that Chuck must be protected and assign Sarah and Casey jointly to the task.

Chuck Bartowski Quotes

05x11 - Chuck Versus the Bullet Train Season 5 / Episode 11: - Chuck Versus the Bullet Train

John Casey: [Speaking to Chuck] Hey, Morgan was taken. [Sounding desperate] Jeff and Lester are my only option.
Chuck Bartowski: Look, I know this sounds crazy, but I've worked with those guys for years. They may seem like botulism victims, but they're loyal. They can do it.
John Casey: [Casey grunts and gets back on the phone with Lester] Lester, now I'm gonna to tell you something I never dreamed I'd be telling you, never dreamed I'd have to tell you, but the situation is extreme. This is Colonel John Casey of the National Security Agency.
Lester Patel: That is so funny! There's a John Casey who works at the Buy More.
John Casey: That's me, you idiot! I'm NSA. Sarah Walker, Chuck Bartowski, they're CIA.
Lester Patel: They are so not.
John Casey: They are so so, you colossal dope! Now, I need you, my daughter needs you, and your country needs you.
Lester Patel: Canada?
John Casey: [Trying to gain self-control] Patel, listen up! You do what I tell you, I'll make you a hero.
Lester Patel: [Lester looks solemnly at Jeffrey] It's the call.
John Casey: Go to my Crown Vic. [Lester and Jeff open the car trunk] Each of you grab a pistol. Leave the big stuff. [Lester and Jeff look at each other and grin]
05x10 - Chuck Versus Bo Season 5 / Episode 10: - Chuck Versus Bo

Chuck Bartowski: [Like a star-struck fan] Hi, Bo Derek. I'm Chuck. My name is Chuck. Really big, big fan. Just loved "10" so, so much!
Morgan Grimes: We really do!
Bo Derek: Yeah, I know what you did with that poster.
Chuck Bartowski: Oh, no, no, no. I - I wouldn't... no, no, no!
Sarah Walker: Ew!
Chuck Bartowski: [Very sheepishly] Not that I didn't love the poster as a boy... [Recovering] How do you know my friend here? [pointing to Morgan]
Bo Derek: I don't like to kiss and tell, but your friend rocked my world one magical night in November.
Morgan Grimes: [In unison with Chuck, who says it doubtingly, Morgan saying it surprisingly] Seriously?
Sarah Walker: Seriously?
John Casey: Seriously?
