    In the first season, the creators and writers of the show wanted to give Cory a second best friend along with Shawn but none of the child actors they tried stuck. The various child actors they tried always had the same assigned chair at the end of the table on the John Adams Middle School cafeteria set. Because of the revolving door of child actors the show went through trying to fill that role, the cast came to jokingly refer to that chair as "the death chair".
