A group of aliens have come to Earth to learn about its population, customs, etc. To avoid detection, they have taken on human form which gives them human emotions, physical needs etc. The show derived much humour from the contrast between the outward appearance adopted by the aliens and his or her actual, internal nature.

Lithgow wanted to be at home with his family and this show gave him that.
