Lela Lee was born in Los Angeles and raised in Southern California. She got the acting bug her freshman year when she was cast in the lead part of a play at UC Berkeley. After that, she began taking drama classes and was at one point taking Drama and Rhetoric as a double major before ultimately graduating with a degree in Rhetoric. Also, while she was a sophomore in college, she made a short video titled "Angry Little Asian Girl-The First Day of School." She hid it in her drawer for 4 years before she finally dusted it off to let it see the light of day. In 1997, she reworked "The First Day of School" and added four more episodes and sent it out to festivals. Critics gave glowing reviews. On a whim, Lela made a batch of 300 t-shirts and sold out by word of mouth. She now draws the Angry Little Asian Girl as a character appearing in the weekly "Angry Little Girls" comic strip world. A book of her collected comics is published by Harry Abrams Inc.
