She started studying dance at age three and, wanting to become a professional dancer, at the age of eleven she convinced her parents to let her attend a summer training program in Montreal and at twelve she was accepted at the École supérieure de ballet du Québec, the training program of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, and moved in with a local French Canadian family.
VanCamp made her acting debut at age 13 in Nickelodeon's series Are You Afraid of the Dark?. She appeared in the short film Rings, which bridged the gap between The Ring and The Ring Two, the latter of which saw her reprising her character from the aforementioned short film. She worked for the film Black Irish in 2006.
From 2002 to 2006 starred as Amy Abbott in the WB drama series Everwood. In 2007, she was a guest star in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Also in 2007, VanCamp won role on the ABC ensemble series Brothers & Sisters as a regular late in the first season, which was her second teaming with executive producer Greg Berlanti from Everwood. VanCamp's character, Rebecca Harper, was introduced as the daughter of the late William Walker (Tom Skerritt) and his long-time mistress, Holly Harper (Patricia Wettig). VanCamp co-starred in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as Sharon Carter, a potential love interest for Chris Evans' titular hero and the niece of the previous film's love interest Peggy Carter, played by 'Hayley Atwell'. The film was shot from April through June 2013 and was released on April 4, 2014. As Marvel Studios is known for contracting their actors for multiple films, it is likely that VanCamp will appear in potential sequels and possibly other films set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Her latest film project, the independent drama The Girl in the Book, started filming in mid-June 2013 in New York City. Based on a true story, the film centers on VanCamp's character Alice Harvey, a 28-year-old assistant book editor and aspiring writer. In order to fund its post-production, the film's producers launched a crowdfunding Kickstarter campaign on June 17, 2013 which successfully surpassed its $65,000 goal on July 1.
VanCamp speaks French fluently and says she "feels at home" when she hears the language. She has also studied Spanish and is an accomplished dancer, having studied ballet, jazz, hip hop and tap as a child, which she credits with assisting her through her fight scenes on Revenge.
