ShareTV: How did you land the job at E! News?
Ali Fedotowsky: About four years ago, I had been coming into E! to do interviews when I was the Bachelorette. Then after my season, I was asked to come in and be a ‘Bachelorette expert’ where I would come in once a week and give my opinion about the latest episode. Then I started hosting a show on NBC, a travel show, where I was traveling around and was doing that for a year, so I wasn’t really coming in the office to talk about the Bachelorette anymore. E! still asked me to guest host a couple times, and it just sort of went from that, to being offered a position. It was a huge shock and a thrilling moment when I got the call because I have always been such a big fan of E!. It was crazy, I remember the day I got the call, I was like ‘Oh my gosh are you serious? That’s awesome!’ So that’s how I ended up here!
ShareTV: Has working at E! been what you have expected?
AF: It’s going great, it is not what I expected at all. Interviewing is a skill. I watch Giuliana interview people and I have so much respect for what she does. She does interviews with so much ease. It is a skill and an art you have to practice to get really good at. In the beginning, I sort of thought, ‘Oh I am really good at talking to people and I can talk to anybody’, but then when I got here I was like, ‘Oh this is a little harder than I thought!’ When you interview big celebrities, sometimes there are questions you can’t ask. Sometimes you have to be very careful about how you word something; you don’t want to offend anyone. Some reporters can be a little slimy and get celebrities to say something and then twist their words. At E! we are not like that. When we interview a celebrity they may not necessarily know that, so their guard is always up. It’s kind of like a game of cat and mouse, juggling it all. It is something I am working on everyday and trying to make better.
AF: Besides that, it has been so fun being here and being on set of a show I have watched for so long. It is a whirlwind, but it’s crazy and fun. One of the best things about working at E! is the people. Giuliana, Jason, Karen and everyone are all just such incredible people. I love working with them everyday. I just feel so lucky to be part of that group.
Ali Fedotowsky, Bachelorette Star Andi Dorfman, and Giuliana Rancic on the set of E! News
ShareTV: Do you have a favorite memory or experience that you have had working for E! News Now?
AF: Celebrities are always meeting a lot of people and getting interviewed, so they if they can remember you, then I feel like that is a big deal. I think it says a lot about who they are and shows that they really make an effort to look at you as a human being. I interviewed Ricky Gervais at a junket for the Muppets movie. A couple days later I interviewed him again and he was like 'It’s good to see you again!' and I just remember thinking, 'Wow. That is someone that I want to be like.' I want to remember everybody and make them feel special because he did that with me. It meant a lot, you know?
AF: Another moment that was kind of fun, and I tease my boyfriend about it, is when I interviewed Jonah Hill on the red carpet for 22 Jump Street. He told me that he was obsessed with my season of the Bachelorette and had the biggest crush on me. After, I was joking with my boyfriend, saying ‘I’m going to leave you for Jonah Hill, sorry he likes me and we hit it off on the red carpet!’ Obviously not, but Jonah Hill is one of my favorite actors. Whenever a celebrity recognizes me from the Bachelorette, I am always very excited and flattered.
ShareTV: Tell us about your relationship with your boyfriend Kevin!
AF: Kevin is great! I think we have been together two years now. You start to lose track of time after awhile when you have found the right person. We live together and we have a little doggy named Owen. Kevin is the dream guy that every girl would want. I feel so lucky to have him. I was just joking with my girlfriends over drinks, I was like ‘literally since Kevin and I moved in together, I haven’t done the dishes once or the laundry. He does the dishes and the laundry. Have I died and gone to heaven?’ He is the dream guy. More than that though, he is the funniest guy I have ever met in my life. When I am feeling down, he makes me laugh. He is just really great, I feel super fortunate.
ShareTV: You have a great sense of style and fashion, do you have a certain style icon that you look up to and admire?
AF: Amelian, my stylist at E! News, is just incredible. When I first came to E!, I was very reserved in my style. I would say I want sleeves and an A line skirt. It especially had to be an A line skirt because I was just self conscious of having bigger hips and I thought it was going to look bad on TV. But Amelian makes me wear things that are totally outside of my comfort zone. She once handed me a pair of shorts with tree leaves on them that I thought looked like grandma shorts, but I wore them and they looked great and now are one of my favorite outfits! Now I wear things that are a little tighter than I used to and I feel comfortable. I really just feel comfortable with my body and wearing things like that because she has taught me how to wear clothes.
AF: As far as celebrity style, I love Kristen Stewart’s fashion because I love that she wears converse sneakers all the time! If I could wear them everyday on E! I would. I like Kristen Stewart’s style for everyday wear and for red carpet style I think that Jessica Alba has incredible style.
Desiree Hartstock and Ali Fedotowsky at Desiree's bridal shower
ShareTV: You recently attended former Bachelorette Desiree Harstock's bridal shower. Do you still keep in touch with other cast members from the Bachelor and Bachelorette?
AF: Yeah, definitely! I just went to her bridal shower a couple weeks ago and it was so lovely. It was at an incredible venue in Hollywood. There were flowers everywhere and a make your own perfume station. It was the best time; we all had so much fun. Desiree is one of the most genuine and sweet people that I have met. She is just so happy and excited to marry Chris. I am really happy for her!
AF: And yeah! I keep in touch with a lot of the people from the Bachelorette and Bachelor seasons. It is really fun to be apart of this 'Bachelor family'. We all support each other. The family just grows every new season, which is awesome.
ShareTV: Have you been keeping up with Bachelor in Paradise?
AF: I did kind of watch a little bit of it. It is hard because I am usually working Monday nights. It is funny because I feel like I would prefer to watch that almost over the Bachelorette or the Bachelor because I know too much about those shows. I know all the behind the scenes stuff so I can’t enjoy it as much. With Bachelor in Paradise, I know nothing about it, so that is something I can just take in for all its juicy gossip and drama.
ShareTV: Do you have any upcoming projects that you are currently working on?
AF: I am currently writing a column for Men’s Health Magazine about sex and relationships called the Girl Next Door. It is really interesting for me because normally I am not very vocal about sex and giving sex advice. Now that I started writing and giving the advice, I love it. I think it is so good to talk about it and get it out there. I am constantly interviewing my girlfriends to get advice from them to see what advice I can give the guys.
AF: Something I also have coming up on September 4th is a show called A-list Beauty Secrets at 8pm on E!. It is all about the crazy and over the top treatments that celebrities get. We went and dove into the real ways that celebrities are getting skinny, getting flawless skin, things like that. We are going to show viewers what treatments work and which ones did not work. It is so cool and I am really excited about that.
