Li'l Abner

A comedy musical based on the comic strip charcters created by Al Capp. When residents of Dogpatch, USA are notified by the government that they must evacuate because of atomic bomb testing, they try to persuade the government that their town is worth saving. Meanwhile, Earthquake McGoon wants to marry Daisy Mae; Daisy Mae wants to marry Li'l Abner, and Li'l Abner just wants to go fishing.

  • Movie Goof (boom mic visible): On at least three occasions during Lil' Abner's meeting with General Bullmoose in Bullmoose's office, the boom mic remains center top of shot as the camera dollies out for a wider shot.
  • The stage production of "Lil Abner" opened at the St. James Theater in New York on November 15, 1956 and ran for 693 performances. Edith (Edie) Adams won the 1957 Tony Award (New York City) for Supporting or Features Actress in a Musical for "Li'l Abner" for portraying Daisy Mae. Stubby Kaye, Billie Hayes, Julie Newmar, Robert Karl and Hope Holiday recreated their stage roles in the movie version.
  • Movie Goof (continuity error): During Abner's and Sam's "The Country's in the Very Best of Hands" musical number, both Mayor Dogmeat and the podium he's standing behind disappear twice.
  • Billie Hayes, who portrayed Li'l Abner's Mother "Mammy" Yokum, is actually younger than Peter Palmer who portrayed Li'l Abner.
