Cloverfield

"Some Thing Has Found Us"

Cloverfield revolves around a monster attack in New York and follows the adventure of five people from the perspective of a hand-held video camera, while they try to save a friend and escape. The movie is exactly the length of a DV Tape and a sub-plot is established by showing bits and pieces of video previously recorded on the tape that is being recorded over.

Movie Trivia/Goofs

  • At the beginning of the film there is a textual reference to DARPA - The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency which is an agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the development of new technology for use by the military.
  • SPOILER: At the end of the movie when they are filming themselves on the ferris wheel and the camera pans out to show the water, you can see a large object splashing into the water near the horizon. This is a reference to the online Viral marketing campaign, in regard to several postings on www.tagruato.jp, speaking about a Satellite that malfunctioned and fell from the sky in that location, sort of a "shout out" to those who followed the game online. This also served as a "ready made" hinted explanation for those who weren't familiar with the viral campaign, as a source for the monster's possible origin. It was, however, hinted all over the Viral campaign that the Cloverfield monster (reffered to widely on the Internet as MGP, or Mr. GrumpyPants), had been around for thousands of years, and this monster in particular was merely a baby, had been woken up, and came to shore startled and scared, searching for something familiar in an entirely unfamiliar world. In the 5 part Internet Manga tie-in, it may have even been suggested that this monster truly was not the only one of its kind in existence. Further elaborating on the Satellite falling from the sky in the film though, this wasn't supposed to be taken as an explanation as to where the monster came from, but rather a reason that the monster had been woken up from its millenia long sleep underneath the vast blanket of the ocean. The satellite fell from the sky at an amazing speed, and stirred the monster to consciousness, which caused the oil tanker to explode, and all hell to break loose.
  • SPOILER: Producer J.J. Abrams came up with the film's last line, "I had a good day."
  • The first trailer for this movie played before Transformers. It showed a giant explosion in the heart of New York City and the Statue of Liberty's head being thrown down a street. It was shot with a hand-held video recorder. There was no title.
